TJ Reid was scorer in chief at Nowlan Park as Kilkenny defeated Galway by 0-21 to 1-14 in this repeat of September’s All-Ireland final.

The hosts controlled the match for the most part but had to move up a gear when the westerners battled back from eight points down after 46 minutes (0-16 to 0-8) to within the minimum by the 58th minute (0-17 to 1-13). But Brian Cody’s men landed four of the last five points through Colin Fennelly, Richie Hogan and Reid (2) to claim their second successive win.

The game appeared to be well and truly out of the Tribesmen’s reach by the 40th minute after a couple of Reid points propelled the All-Ireland champions into a commanding 0-15 to 0-6 advantage. But Galway fought to the end and almost pulled it out of the fire…

After an exchange of points between Reid and Joe Canning the hosts led by the odd point from five early on; Reid then pointed twice more either side of a Conor Fogarty finish to make it 0-7 to 0-3 after 15 minutes. Reid’s tally went up to 0-9 as his side notched four of the next five points before going in at the break leading by eight, 0-13 to 0-5.

The Galway fightback started when Canning (3) and Iarla Tannian clipped over quickfire scores to reduce the arrears to six with 15 minutes left; astonishingly, on 57 minutes, Paul Hoban pounced for a goal and there were just three between the teams, 0-16 to 1-10.

James Maher steadied the Cats with a timely score but the visitors closed within the minimum thanks to a further run of points from Padraig Brehony, David Glennon and Canning. But a Colin Fennelly finish followed by a Reid ‘65’ had the Noresiders three ahead once more with eight minutes to play.

Canning’s 66th-minute free pared the deficit but Richie Hogan’s injury-time strike restored the three-point differential and it was fitting that Reid – who recorded two-thirds of his side’s tally - had the last say as he supplied the confirmation point from a 73rd-minute free.
